Many of the beautiful beaches and coastal regions of Spain have suffered at the hands of over-development and mass-market tourism. Yet, off the main roads, away from the hordes of tourists and keeping a quiet profile are some lovely and luxurious resorts that cater to the privileged from all over the world. At the end of a stimulating and fascinating week or two of sightseeing, it is never a bad idea to find a nice beach, check out the tapas places and sample the local sangria.

 

Costa del Sol:

The Costa del Sol - the Sun Coast - is the most famous of Spain’s beaches and certainly lives up to its name - its sun-drenched climate makes it a lovely place nearly year-round.

The upper-end smallish resorts of Costa del Sol, built in a low-rise, indigenous Mediterranean style surrounding dense and beautiful gardens with excellent reputations for service and amenities.

An extremely short distance to the marvels of Andalusia, it is also a stone’s throw from the ferry to Morocco.

 

The nicest part of the Costa del Sol is the historic center of Malaga - a whitewashed, charming little town with fine restaurants and shopping. The yacht harbor of nearby Puerto Buenos also has outstanding restaurants and excellent shopping.

The dozens of golf courses found throughout the Costa del Sol attract golfers from all over the world.

Sitges:

A picturesque resort near Barcelona, this small town has two things going for it: the first is its postcard-perfect charm and the second is its lively nightlife. Sitges has developed quite a reputation for its after-hours scenes and has become known as a mecca for young Europeans. The open-mindedness of the Spaniards has made it a special destination for gay vacationers from all over the world.

 

And this is all within a 30 minute drive of one of the most cosmopolitan and stylish cities in Europe.

Balearic Islands:

The romantic Mediterranean islands of Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca offer terrific beaches, a wide range of water sports, great restaurants and cafes, worthwhile little towns and a even a bit of history.
