Five hundred years ago, this was the great challenge that led the richest of kings and the bravest of men to set out in search of a way around the massive continent of Africa. It was not until 1436 that Bartholomew Diaz first discovered the Cape of Good Hope at the tip of Africa and it was another 61 years until Vasco de Gama actually rounded the Cape.

In the following centuries, the little town at the southernmost tip of Africa became a welcome haven for the great wooden ships of the day and their exhausted crews on their long and dangerous voyages to the East.

As Cape Town grew, the Europeans who settled there started to move north to cultivate fertile soils. The Cape attracted Europeans - mostly Dutch - in search of new beginnings, new wealth and perhaps just a bit of adventure.
These settlers, however, could not have been more foreign to the land of Africa and its indigenous Khoi and San peoples. Thus began the great evolution - often borne by tensions and dynamics between various groups of inhabitants - that has characterized southern Africa until our own day.

Today's South Africa is still a land in transition and today's South Africans a people in pursuit of lofty dreams.

The dynamics of this evolution have left its mark upon a vibrant and evocative land, a true melting pot, loaded with history and shaped by its past.
